Veterinary Medical Imaging

Veterinary medical imaging is a vital discipline that allows us to visualize the inside of an animal’s body without surgery, in order to establish an accurate diagnosis. Thanks to modern and non-invasive techniques, we can observe organs, bones, soft tissues, and abnormalities that are not visible during a clinical exam.

At Bestiaire du Rhône Veterinary Clinic, we use imaging (digital radiography and ultrasound) to support diagnosis, treatment monitoring, and surgical planning. Additionally, we collaborate with specialists to perform high-quality imaging exams.

FAQ – Frequently Asked Questions

What is veterinary imaging?"

+

Veterinary imaging includes various techniques that allow visualization of the inside of an animal’s body without surgery. It helps in the accurate diagnosis of many conditions. The most common examinations are X-rays, ultrasound, CT scans, and sometimes MRI. In our veterinary clinic, we do not perform CT or MRI scans.

In what cases is medical imaging used for animals?

+

Imaging is used in many situations:

  • Unexplained pain, lameness, fracture, or trauma
  • Digestive, respiratory, or urinary disorders
  • Suspected mass or tumor
  • Pregnancy monitoring (ultrasound)
  • Preoperative assessment or foreign body detection

It helps guide the diagnosis and determine the best treatment

How is an imaging examination performed?

+

It depends on the technique used:

  • X-ray: quick and often does not require anesthesia, except if the animal must remain completely still.
  • Ultrasound: performed using a probe placed on the abdomen or chest; generally well tolerated.
  • CT / MRI: require general anesthesia, as the animal must remain still.
We do not perform these types of examinations in our facility.

Do I need to make an appointment for an imaging examination?

+

Yes, imaging examinations are done by appointment, except in emergencies. Some exams can be performed directly during a consultation, while others require scheduling. If anesthesia is planned or in the case of an abdominal ultrasound, fasting is often required. We will explain all the steps you need to follow.
