INTERNAL MEDICINE

Internal medicine is the medical specialty that focuses on the comprehensive management (diagnostic and therapeutic) of health problems. Dr. V. La Naia has obtained an Advanced Veterinary Studies Certificate (CEAV) in internal medicine for companion animals and can offer the most appropriate diagnostic approach and therapeutic management for your pet’s specific case.

A veterinarian trained in internal medicine is involved in complex diagnostic processes and in managing patients who may present disorders related to the dysfunction of multiple organs. This discipline encompasses several specialized areas: gastroenterology, endocrinology, urology, cardiology, neurology, hematology, pulmonology, and more. The veterinarian relies on additional tests (blood analyses, medical imaging, endoscopy, etc.) to better understand the origin of symptoms and provide personalized care.

FAQ – Frequently Asked Questions

What is veterinary internal medicine?

+

Internal medicine encompasses the disciplines that deal with diseases affecting the internal organs (digestive, urinary, respiratory, endocrine systems, etc.). It allows for the diagnosis and treatment of complex conditions, often chronic or multisystemic, without the need for surgery.

When should I consult a veterinarian specialized in internal medicine?

+

When your primary veterinarian suspects a complex, chronic, or difficult-to-diagnose illness, they may refer your animal to internal medicine for a more thorough evaluation.

What tests can be performed?

+

Depending on the needs, various additional tests may be recommended:

  • Comprehensive blood or urine analyses

  • Medical imaging (X-rays, ultrasound, CT scan, MRI)

  • Endoscopy or biopsies

  • Hormonal or immunological tests

These tests help establish an accurate diagnosis to tailor the treatment.

Is my pet monitored after the consultation?

+

Yes, regular follow-up is essential in internal medicine, especially for chronic diseases. A personalized treatment plan is implemented, and check-ups can be scheduled to monitor disease progression, assess treatment effectiveness, and make adjustments if necessary.
